Job Overview

The Manager, Health and Safety will lead the strategic development and implementation of the organizations’ safety programs in pursuit of achieving the objective and vision of zero workplace injuries. This role will drive health and safety initiatives forward by partnering at all levels of the organization and will be responsible for the education and engagement of people leaders and facility teammates.

The Manager will act as a change agent by influencing leaders to enhance and strengthen safety performance and ultimately the health and safety culture of the organization. The role provides strategic and tactical support and is accountable for leading the planning and delivery of the overall health and safety program.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop the health and safety strategy that supports NLS’ objective of becoming recognized as a best workplace in Canada  

  • Provide advice and guidance to senior leaders with respect to emerging trends, changes to legislation, best practices, and future health and safety initiatives

  • Lead and coordinate training sessions for management, supervisors, and Joint Health and Safety Committee members on the WSIA, roles and responsibilities, industry leading practices, and facility specific improvements. Coordinate all required health and safety training throughout the organization.

  • Provide mentorship and coaching to ensure the facility joint occupational health and safety committees are operating effectively by attending meetings to serve as a resource and provide technical support as needed

  • Partner with facility leaders during the investigation of accidents and near-misses to identify root cause(s) and implement prevention measures. Create further education and remedial and corrective actions across NLS.

  • Lead the activities associated with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act including investigating incidents, reviewing accident reports, filing claims, managing the return to work and modified work programs, and liaising with WSIB officials

  • Lead the development and monitoring of safety performance indicators


Key Attributes of the Ideal Candidate:

  • University degree or certificate in occupational health and safety, CRSP preferred 

  • 7-10 years experience in Health & Safety in an industrial/supply chain environment

  • Demonstrated ability to enhance existing programs and develop large-scale health and safety programs in a supply chain environment

  • Experience developing training curriculum and materials related to safety topics and providing guidance at all levels of the organization

  • Success in delivering a train-the-trainer approach and partnering with Human Resources Business Partners to assist in delivery of the health and safety program

  • Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislation combined with advanced training in hazard recognition, assessment, and control

  • Excellent understanding of incident investigation and root cause analysis

  • Proven success in leading across functional teams as a change agent to influence the safety culture

  • Proven ability to deliver positive business results

  • Preference will be given to those who are certified trainers of material handling equipment and extensive knowledgeable in racking and storage safety
